Chains are used for both power transmission and transport. Their composition of many individual links that move in relation to each other recommends the use of lubricants to reduce friction and wear.
The design of chains places the following requirements on the lubricant:
- it must penetrate well into the chain
- the points to be lubricated must be well lubricated
- the lubricant must offer good protection against wear
- it must protect against corrosion
