Are H1 and HACCP the same?
No, HACCP is a risk detection and elimination methodology used, for example, in the food-processing industry. H1-certified lubricants are used in order to eliminate risks due to contamination in companies that manufacture according to the HACCP concept.
How do H1 lubricants differ from conventional lubricants?
The formulation of an H1 lubricant can deviate considerably from a conventional lubricant that is similar in terms of its properties. H1 lubricants may be formulated only from base substances approved by the certifying organisation, NSF (some of which also have a restricted maximum quantity).
Who must use H1 lubricants?
H1 lubricants are not to be used only where food, drinks or products of the pharmaceuticals and cosmetic industries are processed and manufactured, but also in manufacturing their packaging and descriptions. While packaging possibly impacts directly on the products, descriptions can transfer substances when handled. A machine should already be furnished with H1 lubricants at the time of its delivery. Subsequent application of the lubricant to an H1 product is possible after thorough washing procedures. A change to a new H1 grease can be implemented relatively quickly with friction bearings; however, with antifriction bearings disassembly is generally required.
How can H1 lubricants be recognised?

Must a company that does not produce exclusively for the food-processing industry switch completely to H1 lubricants?
A complete switch is recommended; however, it is not essential. A production company can be divided into “H1 lines” (for manufacture according to the HACCP concept) and “non-H1 lines”. However, the danger of confusing lubricants in the event of maintenance and prior to preventative maintenance constitutes a high risk. What is certain is that all lubricants of a line that can/could come into contact with the product must be certified according to H1.
Are lubricants on a non-mineral basis automatically H1 lubricants?
No. It is true that H1 lubricants may not be developed on the basis of mineral oils, but only on the basis of medicinal white oils, synthetic oils, etc. However, there are also additional restrictions to the contents permitted.
Are H1 lubricants the higher-quality lubricants?
The prohibition of mineral base oils alone makes the use of high-quality synthetic oils necessary. Added to this are restrictions with the additives, which make formulation more challenging and often necessitate the use of high-quality base substances.
Can conventional lubricants be replaced by H1 lubricants without hesitation?
The selection of lubricants for use on high-performance machines such as printing machines or plaiting machines should take place in collaboration with the lubricant manufacturers. In order to find a suitable H1-compliant equivalent, one should take advantage of advice from the lubricant manufacturer.
